-
Fill a basin or sink: Fill a clean basin or sink with lukewarm water. Avoid using hot water, as it can shrink or damage certain fabrics. Choose a suitable detergent: Select a mild detergent specifically formulated for hand washing. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals, unless recommended by the garment’s care label.
-
Pre-treat stains: Gently treat any visible stains with a stain remover or a small amount of detergent. I have found Dawn dishwashing is great for anything. Rub the fabric gently with your fingers to work the solution into the stain.
-
Immerse the clothes: Submerge each piece in the water, one at a time. Gently agitate the water with your hands to create a soapy solution.
-
Wash the clothes: Gently rub and squeeze the clothes in the soapy water, paying attention to any soiled areas. Be careful not to stretch or wring the fabric, as it can cause damage.
-
Rinse thoroughly: Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean lukewarm water. Rinse each garment individually, swishing them around in the water to remove all traces of detergent.
-
Dry the clothes: Lay a clean towel on a flat surface and place the washed clothes on top. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can fade colors. Squeeze out excess water: Lay the sweater on a towel and roll the sweater up in the towel and twist the towel to get water out. Take the sweater out of the towel and lay it flat on a dry towel to dry.
-
Iron or steam if necessary: Once the clothes are dry, you may need to iron or steam them to remove wrinkles. Use the appropriate heat setting for the fabric type.
